Honor the D-Day Vets

“The memorial is an outstanding monument, a place for masses to visit, veterans to remember, and youth to understand how this single event, and sacrifice of human life, changed the course of world history.

“I promise you, not a single person involved in the D-Day invasion, land, sea or air, thought of any action as a heroic deed; rather there was a job to be done, while risking life and limb, many not living through the first hours, while others suffer consequences to this day.

“Today’s freedom and affluence are fruits of their service. Those who served and those who died should be honored to the fullest.”

-- Frank Reese Mays of Madison Heights is a D- Day veteran, The Roanoke Times, July 29, 2002
